Kim Cattrall on Woman’s Hour
Saturday, April 17th, 2010The fabulous Kim Cattrall was interviewed on Woman’s Hour this week. Here’s what she said about how her role as Samantha in Sex and The City changed attitudes (abridged):
“I think we were coming out of a time in 1998 (when SATC started) when people were not dropping like flies any more from AIDS as serums and treatments had been found. We’d come so far in the 60s and 70s and then this thing, like a sexual plague, shut everything down. With the beginning of the series came a new look at sexuality from a woman’s point of view. It didn’t make Samantha a slut, it didn’t make her undiscerning, it didn’t make her a cougar. I felt Samantha made sexuality an integral part of her life; she was expressing it fully. She was single she wasn’t hurting anyone, she had condoms in her purse so she was protecting herself, she was a modern day woman. She wasn’t going to be getting pregnant that wasn’t part of her life. The series was taking a taboo and making it something that people could first laugh about and then talk about.”
